Nuclear Power
In recently, nuclear power is becoming a popular issue in Taiwan. Having been using nuclear power and obtaining benefit from it for thirty-six years, some people began to protest it. Their reasons are that nuclear power plant is unsafety, and we are unable to dispose of nuclear waste eternally safe. Compare with many different ways of generate electricity, there are no perfect way. But, nuclear power is the best way in the many aspects which including economy, safety and environment impact.
According to International Energy Agency (IEA). Oil, gas and coal will be running out in 2030. In Supply and Demand Theory, the price of fossil fuel will be getting higher and higher, If we continue mainly using fossil fuel to generate electricity in the future, we will be unable to afford to our comfortable life as today. Fortunately, Nuclear power has on this kind problem of lacking in resource according to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In Taiwan, we are even just keeping our present power plant and using renewable energy without building new nuclear power plant, our economy will be recession in near future. Unclear plant generates great and constant electricity for sustaining our economy without emission greenhouse gas, this is other way cannot compare with. Furthermore, the costs of the greenhouse effect will be unpayable, this is unlikely we to pay for it .
Second, from the environment point of view. Facing climate change severely, we should reduce the greenhouse gas. But, fossil fuel power stations are emitting carbon dioxide (CO2) the most. And solar panel is High-polluting industries, wind generators take a very large footprint on the natural land, hydro-electric station destroy the river ecosystem. These things are environmentalists would rather that didn’t happen. According to IAEA, if all of your electricity in your lifetime came from nuclear, the overall waste, would go in a Coke can which about two pounds. And we just keep the nuclear waste safely in small area which around 500 square meters, we would never worry about it harms environment.
However, those who are against argue that unclear have less safety, because there were nuclear disasters like Fukushima, Chernobyl and Three-Miles Island. But studies show that that reverse is true, A study done by S.K. Loyalka, compare with costs of human life in different way of generating power, the nuclear is less of cost. Whenever nuclear disaster happened, it destroy the area and takes some time to recover, but it would never destroy the earth. Unlikely, burning the fossil fuel is little by little to smother earth to death. Furthermore, have you ever thought about how many people and species die for the pollution of thermal power generator? The answer is thousand times than nuclear does. There is no one absolute safety but unclear is best.
In short, there are three major ways of generate electricity which including fossil fuel, renewable energy and unclear. Fossil fuel is the worst way to generate electricity in the field of economy, environment and safety. And it is good to use renewable energy for instead portion of power in small family, but renewable energy cannot produce constant mass electricity. Compare those ways, nuclear power has a very low risk for a very high benefit energy.
